The Problem We Are Solving

New Zealand children are moving less, eating more ultra-processed food, and spending more time on screens than ever before. The New Zealand Medical Journal confirms that young New Zealanders have low levels of physical activity and this is not improving.

The Causes

  • Movement is no longer built into daily life

  • Rising screen time, declining active play

  • Ultra-processed foods dominating diets

  • Existing policies not sufficiently effective.

The Consequences

  • Higher anxiety and depression rates in our young people

  • Poorer academic outcomes

  • Increased loneliness and isolation

  • Greater risk of diabetes, heart disease and some cancers.

Our Solution:
The Power Up Movement

Power Up is not just another wellbeing programme, it is a behaviour-change movement that helps children and their families build the habits that power lifelong health, learning and positive influence. It all starts with the Virtual Adventure programme which is delivered free to schools through a fun, interactive digital platform, led by inspiring ASICS ambassadors

Ardie Savea, Kane Williamson and Ameliaranne Ekenasio.

It all starts with the Power Up Virtual Adventure.  Classes join the fun and engaging online adventure, exploring global destinations by taking real-world actions; moving, hydrating, resting, and making good food choices. Children build teamwork, curiosity and healthy habits that last beyond the programme.

By understanding how they feel and choosing small positive actions, they build self-awareness and resilience that carries into home and family life, well beyond the duration of the Virtual Adventure program.

The learning spreads beyond classrooms, through
Ripples of Impact (R.O.I) created by children encouraging their friends and families to join them.

"I noticed improvements in students' mental health, including reduced stress, better focus, and a more positive mood. Regular activity during the programme seemed to enhance their overall wellbeing and resilience."

Many students commented on how the adventure made them more aware of healthy habits, and they looked forward to the new challenges and messages from the ambassadors each week!"

“This program has been a game changer for our kids and whanau in encouraging them to be more active and adopt more healthy habits.

An amazing programme which every child and school in New Zealand needs”.

Why It's Needed:  Evidence and Research

University of Sydney independent evaluation

An independent evaluation found that students increased physical activity levels during the Virtual Adventure programme, reported feeling fitter, healthier and more active, and that physical activity was one of the most enjoyable aspects.

Sport New Zealand — Active Bodies, Active Minds (2025)

Physically active tamariki engage more in learning, stay in school longer, achieve at higher levels and experience greater mental wellbeing. Movement directly supports learning and life outcomes.

JAMA Pediatrics — 1.9 million children study (2024)

Higher fitness levels in children are associated with significantly lower rates of anxiety, depression and ADHD. Physical fitness in childhood also reduces long-term risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.
